Autobiographical

"This is my endlessly recurrent temptation: to go down to that Sea (I think that St. John of the Cross called God a Sea) and there neither dive nor swim nor float, but only dabble and splash, careful not to get out of my depth and holding on to the lifeline which connects me with my things temporal.

It is different from the temptations that met us at the beginning of the Christian life. Then we fought (at least I fought) against admitting the claims of the eternal life at all. And when we had fought, and been beaten, and surrendered, we supposed that all would be fairly plain sailing. This temptation comes later. It is addressed to those who have already admitted the claim in principle and are even making some sort of effort to meet it. Our temptation is to look eagerly for the minimum that will be accepted. We are in fact very like honest but reluctant taxpayers. We approve of an income tax in principle. We make our returns truthfully. But we dread a rise in the tax. We are very careful to pay no more than is necessary. And we hope- we very ardently hope- that after we have paid it there will still be enough left to live on."

Coming Full Circle

Someone who is saying what has been on my heart for many years. And in a beautiful mystery, it was a friend who has been deeply wounded by and divided from the church who told us about this guy. God is doing something wonderful.

Also, listen to an interview with Shane on the NPR show Speaking of Faith.

A Little Stir Crazy?

This is my second day of staying home due to inclement weather {i am highly amused by the wide use of the phrase "inclement weather" on the news, websites, radio, etc...} and I am wondering why it is that I am the LEAST productive on days when I have nothing but time on my hands?

I owe this blog some more meaty posts, particularly a book review I have been meaning to write for a while now. In the meantime, here are some other things worth reading:

- A good post on the decline of our culture.
- I want a skinny house!
- Did I ever mention that I am a contributor at another blog?
- I am currently obsessed with LOST {only 3 years behind the curve}.
- I used to use handkerchiefs, and now I am inspired to take up the habit again.
- Bahahahahaha!

Oh Science, the Great Arbiter of Truth
posted by Amy on February 28, 2008 at 12:31 PM in NPR, News

So this morning as I drove to work, I was listening to NPR, per usual, and they were discussing the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs on The Diane Rehm Show. There have been studies that claim antidepressants increase suicidal tendencies, particularly in teenagers. Because of this, antidepressants have added a warning to their medicines explaining this possible side-effect.

One expert on the show argued that studies have shown that antidepressants do in fact increase suicidal thoughts, but that there is no increase in actual suicide attempts/successes. On the contrary, he asserted that the numbers show that the use of antidepressants reduced the number of suicides, until that warning label was placed on antidepressants, when suicides once again increased as people apparently were more hesitant to take them. Therefore in our effort to warn people and prevent suicides, we may have made things worse.

A second expert said that this was completely wrong, and that studies showed that antidepressants increased suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Thus the warnings placed on antidepressants are quite justified.

In other words, my data can beat up your data.
